Building Materials and Pigments

The research activities of the Building Materials and Pigments group are focused on three main areas: inorganic binders, stone, and pigments. The group is engaged in the development of new mortars suitable for the repair of historical masonry structures, including both masonry and pointing mortars as well as injection mortars for the restoration of plasters and wall mosaics. Another research topic includes the consolidation and surface treatment of stone, as well as the development of new types of artificial stone. A significant part of the research activities is dedicated to the study of degradation processes and the long-term behaviour of mortars and stone during ageing. Research on pigments focuses on the mechanisms of degradation of colour layers and the development of suitable materials for the cleaning and conservation of wall paintings. The group also develops testing methods applicable to historical materials. In addition to research activities, it performs routine analysis of mortars and stone for the purposes of the investigation of historical structures. Besides in-house instrumentation, the group also makes use of the extensive facilities of the Central Laboratories.
