Natural and Synthetic Polymers

The research group Natural and Synthetic Polymers investigates the degradation and conservation strategies for objects made of natural and synthetic polymeric materials. Natural polymers include primarily wood, paper, leather, wax, and natural binders. In the case of synthetic polymers, the group focuses on artworks and collection objects made from polymeric materials of all types, ranging from early so-called semi-synthetic materials to modern synthetic polymers. In addition to real three-dimensional polymeric objects, the group also studies modern polymer-based conservation materials in terms of their protective performance and compatibility with treated objects. The research group is capable of designing comprehensive conservation strategies for cultural heritage objects made of natural or synthetic materials, covering all stages of treatment: cleaning, consolidation, filling losses, application of protective coatings, as well as the design of appropriate storage and environmental conditions.
