Natural and Synthetic Polymers

The Natural and Synthetic Polymer research group studies the damage to and potential means of protecting objects made of natural and synthetic polymers. Natural polymers consist mainly of wood, paper, leather, wax and natural binders. Research on synthetic polymers is focused on works of art and objects in collections made from all kinds of polymer materials, from the oldest, so-called semi-synthetic to modern synthetic polymers. In addition to actual polymeric 3D objects, the group is also concerned with testing modern polymeric products intended for conservation and restoration, in relation to the level of protection and the degree of compatibility. The research group is able to propose a complex approach to care for objects of the cultural heritage made from natural or synthetic materials, i.e. from cleaning, through consolidation and supplementation, the application of protective layers to proposing suitable storage conditions.
